Who can volunteer?
A volunteer is defined as a person or group who performs tasks, activities, and/or provides services for the Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. Volunteers do not receive compensation for performing these tasks. Students who are part of an internship program and/or nursing students who are under the jurisdiction of a program directly administered by a school or college are not considered volunteers.

Volunteers may perform and provide a variety of services and/or activities. The scope of volunteer services includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Serve as Big Brothers/Big Sisters or surrogate parents to consumers;
  • Provide educational activities such as tutoring, and reading;
  • Chaperone recreational activities such as movies, bowling, skating, circus, religious services, and sporting events;
  • Provide transportation to and/or from home visits, work, or shopping;
  • Organize and/or provide group activities such as picnics, dances, and birthday parties;
  • Provide home improvement activities such as landscaping, minor home repairs, decorating, and/or painting.
Volunteers may only perform supplementary services. Required staff positions cannot be filled by volunteers.

How do I volunteer?
Applicants interested in participating in the Volunteer Program will be required to complete the GCDSNB Volunteer Application and participate in a personal interview with the Volunteer Coordinator prior to being allowed to participate in the Volunteer Program. The Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for screening, which includes a check of references for all individuals being considered to participate in the Volunteer Program.

Screening Process
A criminal background check (SLED), DSS Central Abuse Registry check, and check of the child sexual offender lists will be performed by the Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board for all applicants being considered for participation in the Volunteer Program. Applicants with a prior history of abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation will not be allowed to participate in the Volunteer Program.

All active volunteers who may come in direct and/or continuous contact with consumers will be required to have a Two-Step Tuberculosis test and a health screening prior to beginning his/her volunteer assignment. A licensed and certified physician or nurse practitioner will perform all health screenings. Volunteers will also be required to have an annual Tuberculosis (TB) test and/or meet Agency guidelines concerning annual Tuberculosis (TB) screening.

When the screening process has been completed and the applicant has been determined as suitable to participate in the volunteer program based on availability, skills and need for a volunteer, the Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for contacting the worksite supervisor to set a start date.

Motor Vehicle Records
Volunteers providing services that may require him/her to operate Agency vehicles or provide transportation for consumers will be required to possess a valid driver’s license and submit a recent Department of Motor Vehicles ten (10) year driving report from the state the license is issued.

At the sole discretion of GCDSNB, any such volunteer with a negative driving record, or a suspended or revoked driver’s license, may be denied use of Agency vehicles.
